Most people find it more difficult to get out and exercise when the temperature drops and the days get shorter. If you live in an area that gets lots of snow and freezing temperature you are going to be less likely to want to out jogging outside. Slipping and falling on the ice can cause injuries and breathing the cold air is no fun!
However, there are ways that people living in cold climates can still get in a winter workout.
Set Up a Home Gym
No matter the size of your living space, most people have enough room for a small home gym. It doesn’t have to have multiple pieces of large (and expensive) equipment.
With just an adjustable weight bench and a selection of dumbells, you can do a lot. There are at least 18 different exercises that work both the upper and lower body along with the abdominal core.
Also, there are hundreds of good cardio and strength training workout videos that just use bodyweight. If you have the room, you can add a treadmill or elliptical trainer to take your cardio training to the next level.
Exercise with a Buddy
Establishing a commitment to each other to meet at the gym, makes it more difficult to find excuses to not go. As a matter of fact, your buddy may not feel like exercising that day as well, but because each of you did not want to disappoint the other, both of you went.
As a result, you probably feel much happier with yourself after your workout.
Set Some Fitness Goals
It is not fun to end failing at something. It is is a lot harder to give up on exercising if you have an end goal in your mind. Whether it is to drop twenty pounds by spring or run in a spring half marathon, having a goal in mind is a great motivator.
If the end goal seems too far away, set smaller intermediate goals so that when you reach one, you have the next one to work towards. Once you reach a goal, treat yourself, but with something that doesn’t sabotage your efforts.
Warm Up Before You Go Outside
This will work because we don’t want to have to deal with being cold.
By warming up before going outside, and then layering up, you will stay a lot warmer.
As your body gets warmer, you can always remove some of the layers of clothing to keep from getting your body overheated.
Exercising in the winter does not have to be something you dread, but something to look forward towards.
Make it fun by using some or all of these tips.
