Gary Neville Claims He Only Ever Played With Two World-Class Players At Manchester United

Gary Neville’s illustrious career at Manchester United allowed him to play alongside some of the biggest names in Premier League history.

The 43-year-old former Red Devils right-back enjoyed 19 seasons at Old Trafford and saw legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson bring in the likes of Wayne Rooney, Eric Cantona and Rio Ferdinand.

Ahead of Liverpool’s clash with United, Jamie Carragher has revealed that Neville told him that he had only played with two world-class players at the club.

“Gary Neville once told in me he felt he only ever played with two genuinely world class players in his Manchester United career,” he wrote for the Telegraph.

“One was Cristiano Ronaldo. The other was Peter Schmeichel. That is how fundamental he was to United’s success.”

Neville has previously spoken about his rough time at the club with the 55-year-old Dane, who many regard as the best ‘keeper in Premier League history.

“When I first got into the first team at 18/19, Peter Schmeichel, I’ve said it before, quite often was brutal with me,” he told Quickly Kevin, will he score? “Now, I speak to him and we laugh about it, but he brutally was, yeah.

“He didn’t fancy me as a player that much. Peter Schmeichel was the goalkeeper and that back four of [Steve] Bruce, [Gary] Pallister, [Paul] Parker and [Denis] Irwin was legendary.

“I was the first to break into that and he saw it as a risk, he saw it as a challenge to the fact that we’d been successful.

“Paul Parker picked up an injury and I started getting in at right-back, and obviously as a young player, you’re not perfect, you make a couple of mistakes and he just absolutely battered me in training, daily, about my defending, my crossing.

“He used to do this crossing practice after the game and he used to stand on the penalty spot and catch it and say, ‘That’s s***.’ He regularly just did that and he was actually just being really tough and horrible with me.”
